The adventure capital of Fiji

One stretch of coast you could drive end to end in twenty minutes, with more to do on it than most countries manage.

Pacific Harbour earned that name and it holds up. A shark dive in Beqa Lagoon, a rafting run through a rainforest gorge, a zip line strung above the Wainadoi valley, a championship course laid out by Robert Trent Jones Jr., and a long left-hand reef break that surfers cross oceans for.

Dive with sharks in Beqa Lagoon

Beqa Lagoon lies a few kilometres offshore and is one of the few places in the world where divers meet bull sharks in open water rather than from a cage. Boats leave early from Pacific Harbour and you are back for a late lunch.

An hour, or a morning

Snorkel the soft coral

Fiji is called the soft coral capital of the world, and the reef is a short boat ride from the beach. There are kayaks and paddleboards at the villa if you would rather stay in the shallows.

Surf Frigates Passage

A long left-hander breaks where the outer reef meets deep water, about half an hour out. A boat can collect surfers from the sand in front of the estate, conditions and operator permitting, rather than from a marina after a drive.

Raft or tube the Navua River

Inland from Pacific Harbour the Navua cuts a narrow gorge through rainforest, with waterfalls dropping straight into the water. You can run it on a raft or float the gentler stretches on a tube. Guests mention this more often than anything else they do off the estate.

Zip through the rainforest canopy

A course of eight lines strung through the canopy about twenty-five minutes from the gate, which runs in almost any weather. Teenagers generally want to go round twice.

Leave after breakfast

A day on an island

Boats run out to the small islands off this stretch of coast. Take lunch from the villa, swim, and be back before the light goes.

Game fishing offshore

Wahoo, mahi mahi and yellowfin run outside the reef, and charters leave from the marina at Pacific Harbour. The chef is happy to cook whatever comes back.

Waterfalls and the highlands by 4WD

The interior of Viti Levu is mountainous and largely empty. A day in a four-wheel drive gets you to villages and waterfalls you can swim beneath.

Championship golf along the coast

There is a championship course an hour west, laid out through the dunes above the beach, and a Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed one closer to home.

Guided safaris run west along the coast and out towards Beqa, stopping at beaches you cannot reach by road.

Meke, kava and a village welcome

A meke is storytelling danced and sung; kava is the drink that accompanies almost every Fijian welcome. Both can happen at the house, and the staff will arrange it, or you can visit a village and be received properly.

The difference

World-class water. Entirely private living.

Divers and surfers normally accept a resort in order to be near the thing they came for: shared boats, shared tables, other people’s holidays. Villa Takali is the same coastline without the resort attached to it.

The estate takes one party at a time. Mornings on the water, afternoons on two and a half acres that belong to you for the week.
